Professional Lightning Protection Across the UK

Lightning protection system design, installation and testing for commercial, industrial and public sector buildings across the UK.

Electrical Testing UK designs, installs and tests lightning protection systems for commercial, industrial and public sector clients. A direct lightning strike to an unprotected building can cause structural damage, fire, equipment destruction and risk to life. Even a nearby strike can induce damaging transient voltages into electrical and data systems. Our engineers carry out lightning risk assessments to BS EN 62305, design protection systems appropriate to the risk level and structure, and install and test to the standard required for certification and insurance compliance.

Lightning Protection

Key Features Include

Risk Assessment to BS EN 62305

We carry out structured lightning risk assessments to BS EN 62305-2, determining the risk level for your building and the protection measures required before any system is specified.

Design, Installation and Testing

We manage the full project from risk assessment and system design through to installation, testing and the issue of a test certificate, providing a single point of responsibility throughout.

External and Internal Protection

We install both external lightning protection systems and internal surge protection measures, providing comprehensive protection for the structure and the electrical and electronic systems within it.

Annual Inspection and Testing

Lightning protection systems must be inspected and tested annually under BS EN 62305. We carry out annual inspections and issue test certificates confirming the system remains in compliance.

Contract

Full Certification and Documentation

Every installation is fully documented and certified, with design drawings, installation records and test certificates provided in the format required by your insurer and building control.

Lightning Protection Services for Commercial, Industrial and Public Sector Buildings

Lightning Risk Assessments for Buildings and Structures We carry out lightning risk assessments to BS EN 62305-2, assessing the structure, location, occupancy and consequences of a strike to determine the lightning protection level required and inform the system design.

External Lightning Protection System Installation We design and install external lightning protection systems comprising air termination networks, down conductors and earth termination systems to BS EN 62305-3, with every element designed around the specific structure and risk assessment findings.

Lightning Protection for Industrial and High-Risk Structures We design and install lightning protection for high-risk industrial structures including chimneys, storage tanks and facilities with flammable atmospheres, applying the additional requirements for hazardous areas and ensuring correct bonding to process equipment and pipework.

Internal Lightning Protection and Surge Protection Nearby lightning events can induce damaging voltages into electrical and data systems even without a direct strike. We design and install coordinated surge protective devices at incoming supply, distribution boards and point-of-use locations, either as a standalone service or as part of a complete lightning protection installation.

Annual Lightning Protection Inspection and Testing BS EN 62305 requires inspection and testing at intervals not exceeding twelve months. We test continuity and resistance of all conductors and earth electrodes, verify connections and bonding, and issue a test certificate on completion.

Lightning Protection for Heritage and Listed Buildings We design lightning protection for listed buildings using concealed or sympathetically routed conductors and minimally invasive fixing methods, working within listed building consent requirements and in consultation with conservation officers where required.

The Lightning Protection Installation and Testing Process Process

Carrying out the lightning risk assessment Every lightning protection project begins with a structured risk assessment to BS EN 62305-2. We assess the building dimensions, construction, location, occupancy and the electrical and electronic systems within it, calculate the risk of a damaging lightning event and determine the lightning protection level required. The risk assessment is documented and forms the basis for the system design.

Designing the lightning protection system The system design specifies the air termination method and geometry, the number and routing of down conductors, the earth termination arrangement and the bonding requirements for all metallic services entering the structure. For buildings with internal electronic systems, the design also covers the coordinated surge protection measures required to protect electrical and data infrastructure. We produce a full set of design drawings before installation begins.

Installing the lightning protection system Installation is carried out by our own qualified engineers to the design specification and BS EN 62305. All conductors, fixings, joints and earth electrodes are installed in accordance with the standard, with particular attention to conductor routing, bonding connections and earth electrode installation. On completion the system is tested and a commissioning certificate issued.

Annual inspection and test We carry out annual inspections and earth continuity testing for all lightning protection systems, checking every conductor, connection, bonding point and earth electrode against the original installation record. Test results are documented and a test certificate issued, confirming the system remains in compliance with BS EN 62305 and providing the evidence your insurer requires.

Why Businesses and Landlords Choose Electrical Testing UK for Lightning Protection

Full project management from risk assessment to certificate We carry out the risk assessment, produce the system design, install the protection and issue the test certificate. One contractor manages the full scope, with a single point of responsibility for the complete installation.

Designed to the correct standard for your structure We do not apply standard products or generic designs. Every lightning protection system we design is based on a structured risk assessment and tailored to the specific building, its risk level and its electrical infrastructure.

Internal and external protection under one contract We install both external lightning protection systems and internal surge protection measures, providing comprehensive protection for the structure and its electrical and data systems from a single contractor.

Annual inspection and testing programme We offer planned annual inspection and testing programmes for lightning protection systems, ensuring your installation remains compliant and certificated without the administrative burden of tracking and booking individual visits.

Qualified engineers, not subcontractors All lightning protection design, installation and testing is carried out by our own qualified engineers. We do not subcontract, so quality and accountability remain with Electrical Testing UK throughout every project.
